Prvn\u00ed n\u00e1vrhy tohoto sk\u00fatru vznikly u\u017e rok p\u0159ed koncem v\u00e1lky od in\u017een\u00fdr\u016f Renza Spoltiho a Vittoria Cassiniho a nazvali jej MP5, ale \u0159\u00edkali mu &bdquo;Paperino&ldquo; (ka\u010d\u00e1tko). Ov\u0161em s&nbsp;t\u00edmto n\u00e1vrhem nebyl majitel tov\u00e1rny Piaggio spokojen a cht\u011bl nov\u00fd n\u00e1vrh designu, \u00fakol zadal leteck\u00e9mu in\u017een\u00fdrovi Corradinu D&acute;Ascaniovi. Ten ov\u0161em sk\u00fatry t\u00e9 doby pova\u017eoval za p\u0159\u00edli\u0161 velk\u00e9 a nespolehliv\u00e9 stroje. P\u016fvodn\u00ed n\u00e1vrh MP5 se mu nel\u00edbil v\u016fbec a cel\u00fd design vytvo\u0159il s\u00e1m znovu, pojmenoval ho MP6. Jakmile Piaggio tento n\u00e1vrh uvid\u011bl, okomentoval to slovy: &bdquo;Sembra una vespa!&ldquo; (Podob\u00e1 se vose.), a tak vznikl nov\u00fd typ sk\u00fatru. Stroj si Piaggio nechal patentovat 23. dubna 1946 p\u0159esn\u011b ve dvan\u00e1ct hodin dopoledne na Ministerstvu pr\u016fmyslu a obchodu.P\u016fvodn\u00ed podoba stroje byl kompaktn\u00ed r\u00e1m, motor o obsahu 98 cm&sup3;, kter\u00fd poh\u00e1n\u00ed zadn\u00ed n\u00e1pravu a osmipalcov\u00e1 kola. Sk\u00fatry tohoto typu se nejr\u016fzn\u011bj\u0161\u00edmi inovacemi vyr\u00e1b\u011bj\u00ed dodnes a staly se ikonami mezi motocykly. Dodnes pat\u0159\u00ed mezi nejobl\u00edben\u011bj\u0161\u00ed dopravn\u00ed prost\u0159edky hlavn\u011b na jihu a z\u00e1pad\u011b Evropy, hlavn\u011b d\u00edky sv\u00e9 dostupn\u00e9 cen\u011b a pohodlnosti. Dokonce i v&nbsp;\u010cesk\u00e9 republice si tento stroj z\u00edskal celou \u0159adu sympatizant\u016f a v&nbsp;roce 2004 zalo\u017eil V\u00edt\u011bzslav K\u0159\u00ed\u017eek Vespa club.
